Aleksandra Krunic wins Bol Open

Aleksandra Krunic, a Serbian player born in Moscow is the new winner of the WTA Croatia Bol Open. She was leading against the Romanian Alexandra Cadantu in the final with 6:3, 3:0 when Cadantu decided to retire due to the back injury.

“I am sorry that we have not played the match till the end but Cadantu had problems during the whole week and she put up a fight. I am extremely happy that I managed, firstly to reach my first WTA final and now to win my first WTA title. I will always remember Bol for that.

Thanks to everyone who organized the tournament, especially to ball boys. Sometimes I can be mean to them, I would use this opportunity to apologize, I have not been doing that intentionally.” – said the new champion of Bol, Aleksandra Krunic.

Aleksandra entered the WTA Croatia Bol Open tournament as 124th in the world, from today she is going to be ranked at 101st.

On the Central Court of the Bluesun tennis center, there was an exhibition between Iva Majoli and Martina Hingis, and after that the two finals -in singles and in doubles. Iva Majoli invited the Swiss to Bol for a rematch of the Roland Garros finals from 20 years ago. Iva won in Paris but now Hingis evened the score at the exhibition. After 4:4 in gems, Swiss won the tiebreak 7:5.

Iva and Martina started the match and then they were accompanied by the minister of finance Zdravko Maric and one of the top managers of the Gazprom, Aleksandar Medvjedev. They finished the match playing singles though. Majoli started ahead in the tie-break but Martina rallied behind and got her revenge for the defeat from 20 years ago.

“Bol is an awesome destination, this is the first time I am here. I am glad that Iva invited me. It is nice that it finally happened. It is hard to find time for an exhibition while I am still actively competing in doubles but we did it. We spent the Saturday evening together, went to the beach, and enjoyed the performance of a Swiss DJ, the perfect situation… If I get another chance I will come on Brac again.” –she said.

“Martina was unbeatable at that time, not losing a single match. After the semi-final with Monica Seles everybody was expecting a routine finale. In the 4th round I was a set down, losing 1:4 and 15:40 to Lindsay Davenport but I managed to pull through. Then I played against Amanda Coetzer who defeated Steffi Graf who I never won against, making me a favor. We both had our chances ,that was one of the ugliest matches. Against Martina I started nervous. This was the 100th Roland Garros and my first finals; an incredible feeling. I managed to pull together, play point-by-point and I won in the end”- said Majoli

The director of the WTA Croatia Bol Open, Feliks Lukas was also happy with the outcome. “I thank to everyone on their support. We have been working through the whole year for this. This is a fantastic story for the promotion of Croatia and we hope to continue doing the same” – said Lukas.

The minister of tourism, Gari Cappelli was also happy. “It is fantastic that the tournament is not organized during the high season, in low season we need this kind of manifestation, festivals and sports manifestations; this brings additional reasons for tourists to come, any kind of entertainment. Croatia has to follow this trend.” –concluded Cappelli.
